Transition Year

Transition year is an optional year that acts as a bridge between the Junior Certificate and the Leaving Certificate programmes.

The T.Y. programme is intended to facilitate the development of the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and social capabilities of the student and to prepare them for their role as responsible members of society.

In particular, the Transition Year Programme aims to provide young people with the skills to:

  • Discover and develop their own individual talents, aptitudes and abilities.
  • Help them to cope positively with their personal development and to reach a proper appreciation of their own worth.
  • Allow students take responsibility for their own learning and decision-making.
  • Help them improve their communication skills; verbal, written and other forms such as music, art etc.
  • Improve their educational performance and reach a stage of maturity that will enable them to deal adequately with their Leaving Cert. programmes.
  • Enable them experience the world of work through the work experience programme.
  • Enable them deepen their religious and social values through a greater awareness of their own community, its strengths, weaknesses and needs.

    Transition Year Activities vary from year to year. Opportunities that have been enjoyed by TY students in the past includes:

    • Poetry Workshop
    • Song School
    • Management of School Bank
    • African Drumming
    • Dance classes – Traditional Irish dancing/Line dancing/Ballroom Dancing
    • Visit to the theatre to see a full production of a play – from the Leaving Cert Curriculum
    • History trip - Visit to Portumna Work House/ Kilmainham Gaol/Glasnevin Cemetery/Croke Park
    • Geography trip – Visit to Inis Mór
    • Debating at the Council of Europe in Dublin Castle
    • Coaching Course/Refereeing course
    • Movie Making
    • Voluntary Work/Fundraising
    • Christmas Enterprise Market
    • Participation in Seachtáin na Gaeilge
    • Personal Development workshops including Public Speaking and Fundamental Skills development
    • Drugs Awareness Programme
    • SPHE programme- Dealing with Emotions
    • Speakers in from Pieta House/ AWARE/ Bushypark/ Clare Haven House
    • Visits to art exhibitions, museums
    • Hiking along the Cliffs of Moher/The Burren/ The 12 O’ Clock Hills
    • First Aid
    • Road Safety Awareness
    • Trips – Achill 3 day and many one day trips/Variety of Leisure Activities
