The fourth year LCVP class have been busy of late with their Valentine's fundraiser. Students decided to fundraise for Pieta House by organising a fun Valentine's themed event. Beautiful handcrafted cup cakes were delivered throughout the school with private personal messages attached. The LCVP class considered a variety of charities and chose to donate their profits to Pieta House. We hope to have a visit from the charity later this year to tell us about their work.
Youth Connect, an organisation tasked with educating young people about Employment Legislation will present a workshop to fourth year LCVP students and Transition Year students on Monday, February 22nd. Students hope to gain an insight into how Employment Laws will influence their experiences in the workplace.
Students visited O' Connor's Bakery earlier this year. Mr. Brendan O' Connor kindly organised a tour of the bakery and helped students gain an understanding of how indigenous enterprises support the communities in which they operate. Our students learned about marketing, finance, production and distribution in a business that is familiar to all local residents. We are always grateful to the members of our local business community for their assistance with many elements of the LCVP programme, including visits out and provision of work experience.
TY1 presented a cheque for €1,000 that they raised as part of their YSI project on mental health.
Chris and James from Grow came to the school and were presented with the cheque.
Well done to all the TY Students for their hard work.
The TY students completed a Bungee jump to raise awareness of positive mental health as part of their YSI Project……… They have raised over €900 for Grow…. A mental health organisation that helps promote positive mental health
Transition Year Music – Song School
Watch out Jedward, our transition years could be hot competition for this years Eurovision!! Recently the Transition Year students enjoyed two days of song composition, performance and studio recording with Justin and David from Song School. They visited the school in February and delivered a fantastic workshop, where students gained a first-hand insight into life as a professional songwriter.
Each of the students will receive a CD of their songs, along with a Song School/IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation) certificate of participation. The transition years found the two days most enjoyable.
Thanks to Ms Mulhern (Music Teacher) for organising it.
In January the Parent's Association, very generously, provided funding for Cyberbullying and Internet Safety training for all students, staff and parents. In school as well as in the wider community, we are always conscious of this ever changing area. In our SPHE programme we deal with the necessity to be always vigilant in our online interactions, whether they are social, work or business related. The very informative talk certainly opened our eyes to the steps we can take to try to maintain safe and private online activity. Many thanks as always to our Parents for the support in providing this very valuable expreience for the school
The dates for this years Leaving certificate and Junior Certificate exams have been published and they are available from the Examination website through the link below here.
On Thursday and Friday the 6th and 7th of November, 57 of our leaving Cert students attended a two day retreat in Esker Co Galway. This retreat is a long tradition in St Joseph’s Secondary school, taking place for over 20 years. The retreat offers young people the opportunity to come away together to a quiet place, to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Esker, to have fun, and activities and reflective time together. It offers them the time and opportunity to celebrate together their own humanity and affirm their dignity and self-worth, and to bond more with each other. It offers them a space to voice their questions, doubts and struggles, in a safe place where they are listened to and the space and time to experience themselves and others with truth and real joy.
We hope this reflection time will help our Leaving Cert students to focus on the difficult task ahead in the coming year but also have helped them by providing so lifelong coping skills.
Thanks to the retreat team and also the teachers who organized and went on the retreat-Ms Hogan, Mr Spelman and Ms Fitzgerald.
