Life could crunch if you throw the punch
We are Transition Year students from St. Joseph's Secondary School Tulla and as part of our Young Social Innovators project we are running a campaign entitled “Life could crunch if you throw the punch”. The aim of our campaign is to raise awareness about the effects of antisocial behaviour. We would like to reduce the amount of deaths and injuries caused by the culture of fighting while socialising.
We would like people to think about the seriousness and consequences of throwing a punch on a night out. We hope this campaign will dramatically decrease the numbers of people involved in physical altercations that happen when alcohol has been consumed. In the coming days you may see posters in your locality that we designed illustrating our message.
Congratulations to 6 of our very talented TY students who represented our school at this year's BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition in the RDS. In its 55th year, the competition saw 4,251 students from 383 schools across the island of Ireland compete for the coveted title "BT Young Scientist and Technologist of the Year".
Students, staff and parents alike were delighted that 2 groups were successful in becoming finalists and in showcasing their projects at the exhibition.
Project 1: Luke Meade, Ronan McGrath and Stephen Moloney. A technology entry, titled, "Making Grass Green" that converted heat energy in grass cuttings into voltage. This is a project that showed excellent, engineering, technological and analytical skills.
Project 2: Liam Boyce, Stephen Marsh and James McNulty. A physical, chemical and mathematical sciences entry, titled, "The Will of the People - A study of electoral voting systems". This group proposed a number of changes to the current electoral system with some fascinating findings.
Congratulations to both teams and their teachers. We will be watching out for you in the future!
Pictured below are both teams with our VIP visitors to the stand, TD Timmy Dooley and Minister Pat Breen.
The school enjoyed a wonderful carol service on Thursday 20th December. The first and second year music classes along with the choir and other musicians performed a variety of carols, Christmas classics and instrumental pieces, and we also listened to the story of the Nativity.
Over 100 students took part, thank you all for your participation. It showcased the amazing talent we have in St. Joseph's.
Well done everyone!
On Tuesday 17th of December 2018, the Junior Cert Art Class and two fifth years went to Glor to see the exhibition "Mick O Dea Selects".
O Dea has just finished his term as president of RHA and here he rounded up his term by inviting a selection of wonderful RHA artists to exhibit with him in his home town. Before we left the school we studied O Deas "Milk and Honey " which hangs above the music room in the GP area.
On arrival in Glor we were met by Alan who gave us the grand tour back stage, through the auditorium , the dressing room, and the green room where Artists chill before performance ..
We were then delighted to be served huge mugs of hot chocolate and biscuits, setting us up nicely for a few hours drawing/sketching and note taking in the gallery upstairs. Miss Nugent was on hand to answer any questions related to the War of Independance which is a strong influence on O Deas work.
Before we headed back to the bus Miss Moran wanted to show us some of the Art works around town.. we went to see Shane Gilmores Sculptures, and found out that there is one of his pieces in the Meditation room which commemorates John Delaney, the former Art Teacher in SJT.
It was a day filled with information and we learned that Ennis has so much to offer artistically.....

To officially mark the beginning of the Christmas Season in St.Josephs, Fr Brendan Quinlivan, Fr. Brendan Lawlor and Sr. Bosco joined First Years, Transition Years and staff in a Christmas Prayer Service.
We lit a candle of remembrance to commemorate past students Jack Lynch and Scarlett Donnellan Feeley and hung 2 special decorations on our Christmas tree in their memory. After we switched on the lights, we lifted our spirits with a rapturous round of "Jingle all the way"!
