GOOD LUCK to BTYSTE Entrants 2025
This year, St. Joseph’s is thrilled to have six students participating in the BT Young Scientist competition at the RDS in Dublin this January.
We are extremely proud of their dedication and hard work on their projects, and we wish them the very best of luck.
Please see below the details of the students and their projects:
1.Pea Power: A Sustainable Protein Crop
This project involves a comparative analysis of nitrogen levels in various pea seed varieties cultivated by ISSA Irish Seed Savers. The goal is to determine their potential as a sustainable alternative protein source in human diets. By reducing the consumption of animal-based proteins, this project aims to lower CO2 and CH4 emissions, contributing to a decrease in greenhouse gases and promoting environmental sustainability.
Biological Ecological Science - Intermediate Group Kiera Kelly and Emily Cronin

2.Bioelectrical Production
This study explores the viability of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) as an alternative energy source. The project aims to understand the efficiency and practicality of using microbial activity to generate electricity. It will also investigate which soil types generate the highest electrical output. By harnessing this renewable energy, the project aims to determine its future potential as a sustainable energy source.
Chemical and Mathematical Science - Junior Group Mark Finnegan, Connor Fitzgerald, and Andrew Ivanovas
